IF THE Sun gives off white light, why does it appear yellow?
The Sun does 'emit' white light, which is actually a composite of all the visible frequencies of light. The Sun's white light is scattered by Earth's atmosphere before reaching the Earth's surface. Light at the violet/blue end of the spectrum is most easily scattered by molecules of air. Red, orange and yellow lightwaves are least scattered and these are thus transmitted through the atmosphere more readily than violet/blue. That is why the Sun looks yellow and sometimes orange-red at sunset.
